Thank you for your participation in this class. I hope you will be able to complete the on-line course evaluations. It would also be helpful to me if you could comment on each question below.
1. So, what is medical ethics? Is it an important subject to study? Why/why not?
2. Reflect on your experience in this class. Were you able to contribute to class discussion? Were you well-prepared? An active participant in class? Active on-line? Why/why not?
3. What is the most valuable idea/lesson/argument/skill you will take away from class?
4. What is still confusing to you or never seemed worthwhile?
5. Is the blog helpful in understanding the material? Please explain how I could improve the use of the blog for real understanding of the course material. Comment on frequency of required postings, topics,% of final grade, etc.
6. What have you learned in the course that surprised you?
7. What experience in your life resonated in this course? Do you have any suggestions to better link your life experiences, and the experiences of students like you, with course material/topics?
8. Generally, why are you in school? Do you think you would take more philosophy if money/time weren't factors? Explain.
1. Biomedical ethics is a form of applied ethics, more specifically the study of right and wrong in terms of medical issues. It is a very important to study, especially with all the complex issues it deals with, including stem cell research, abortion, and physician assisted suicide.
ReplyDelete2. I feel I was prepared for class discussions. It helped me articulate my arguments in order to present them in class.
3. The most value lesson I learned were the major ethical theories. Before I had a general concept of right and wrong but could not say why. No I have legitimate evidence to provide merit to my beliefs.
4. The most confusing article for me was the one I did my presentation on, the Buchanan one. I understand the general concept now, but trying to sort through all the examples and details got me at the time.
5. To me the blog was helpful. it presented some unique situations to which I had to decide where I stood. It was also helpful to read others arguments and see things from a different perspective. I think the topics corresponded well with the issues covered in class.
6. I learned about myself, and that surprised me. Beforehand, I would always see both sides of an issue and really couldn't definitively choose one or the other. As the class went on, I found myself being able to choose a side and be able to articulate why as well.
7. I think students offering to share personal stories related to topics in the class helped augment understanding of the material. Especially the nursing majors, since they had experienced many of the issues in class, it was nice to hear from their point of view.
8. I am in school to further my education, in order to obtain a job in my career field. I probably would take more philosophy if I had the time. It is a counterbalance to all the science I am concentrating on, so it provides a different perspective. Also, I am always pushed in your classes, however it always solidifies my understanding. I feel I have a pretty good grasp on some fairly complex philosophical topics thanks to you and your courses. I would definitely like to further this knowledge if time weren't an issue.
1) Medical ethics is a form of applied ethics where you study ethical situations regarding medicine or health care. It is a philosophy class and many questions can remain unaswered. It is an important class to subject to study, especially if you are studying to be a health professional because it gets you to ask yourself hard questions you probably would not think about outside of this class.
ReplyDelete2) I did not feel I was prepared enough to answer questions or participate in class because of my lack of knowledge in the medical field. I am also very shy and it is hard for me to speak up about my beliefs especially when there are upper classmen in the room. It was easier for me to be active online because I can think through my responses longer and not worry about what others are thinking. If I had a better medical background I feel I would have participated in class more because I would not second guess my terminology or knowledge of the subject.
3) The most valuable idea I will take from this class is to discuss with your family what you want and what they want to happen when they are near death. Its very important so there are no questions about what someone wants and no fighting between relatives.
4) I am still confused on some of the procedures talked about in class.
5) I feel the blogs are helpful in understanding the material. It gives you a chance to articulate your ideas after you have thought about them outside of class. Instead of always asking questions for us to answer, maybe we could ask you questions about the readings or other general questions and you could respond on the blog for everyone to see. I feel that the number of required postings is fine as long as there are numerous options available. It is time consuming so maybe making it worth a little more would be a greater incentive to us.
6) I learned that ethics is a very hard subject and requires a lot of thought and energy. I really did not know what I was going into before the class started. It also surprised me that people really take their prejudices out on their doctors.
7) I do not have much life experience that resonated in the course. I really do not have any sort of medical background. I have only been in the hospital twice for things that were not serious at all.
8) I am in school so that I can get a good job to help pay the bills for my son. My parents are also forcing me to stay in school. I would probably take more philosophy classes if I could, just a different subject. I would try to take a philosophy course with a subject I knew a little more about or even one that had nothing to do with health care. This course was interesting and really made me think which I need to do more, especially about serious issues, and I would like to experience more of philosophy as long as its a different subject. No offense to you Dr. Cate, I just have no knowledge about health care or medicine.
Biomedical ethics is attempting to figure out what is right and wrong in the field of medicine. The key point being trying, not everyone will come to a consensus on what they feel is right and wrong, but it is important to hear and listen to others thoughts and ideas.
ReplyDeleteI feel I was really prepared for class. I read the material and always tried to voice my opinion in class. Even though there were times when I could not come to a complete answer on certain topics. I still thought about the examples given in class.
The most valuable thing taken from this class is learning how to listen to others, even when I do not agree. If someone feels one way and I feel the other way it doesn't make them wrong. I have to respect their decsion and agree to disagree with them.
Stem cell research is not confusing to me I understand the idea, I just do not know how I feel on the topic. In some ways I feel it is good, and in other ways not so much.
The blog was definetly a benefit. It was an easy way of understanding the material and hearing other students opinions on the topic. It also required us to do the readings, and when we do this we will be able to discuss the topic in class. It is also an easy way to earn points.
From this course I learned a lot about my own opinion and how listening to others thoughts may not change my opinion, but at least understand it a little better. If a person whole-heartily belives in wat they are saying who am i to tell them that they are wrong?
Relating this course to a personsl experience could really benefit the class, however, it would be hard to get people to share their experiences in class, especially if it is a sensitive subject. You could require students to include personal experiences in their thought papers, but then again a student could be uncomfortable doing this or just simply not have any personal experiecnes on the topic.
I am in school because I truly feel education is the road to success. My goal is to teach, and there is no way I would be able to do so without the proper education. I would certainly take more Philosophy classes if time or money permitted. I did not know how well I would enjoy this class because I know very little about the medical field, but I not only learned a lot about Biomedical Ethics, but also a lot about myslef.
1. Medical ethics is a consideration of ethics as they apply to medicine. Of course it is important and should be studied because humans need to agree on boundaries or else progress will eliminate them, but possibly not ethically.
ReplyDelete2. I feel like I was an active participant in class and prepared for discussion. Having the background of Biology was helpful. Apparently I was not active enough online, which is why I'm blogging so much tonight.
3. I was most impressed by euthanasia because to me it seems like a much more clear-cut answer than any other ethical debate we had.
4. I don't understand how stem cells can cause enhancements in an adult. That's different than fixing Parkinson's or another physical medical problem, but could you use stem cells to be a better piano player?
5. I do enjoy the blogs (I'm not sure why I'm doing so many tonight though). However, I don't like that my comments have to be previewed before the are posted, mainly because if there are other comments on the topic I just see them because they aren't posted yet. Any way where the blogs can be used as discussion rather than everyone responding to one prompt I think is helpful.
6. I was most surprised to find out how liberal my views were compared to the rest of the class. I felt I was at one end of the spectrum, which I was not expecting at all and is unusual for me.
7. Well, not much in reality. I've learned about these things in other classes, but in NKY, it's just not likely to come across euthanasia or participate in stem cell research.
8. If I could just stay in school and get ten different degrees, I might not be so terrified of picking one. Honestly, I thought I would hate philosophy, which is why I put off both core credits until senior year. I don't at all- wish I could take the class in London! I would love to take more Philosophy- it is not pretentious like I expected and enables me to put into rational words thoughts that would otherwise be abstract.
1. Biomedical Ethics is a sub topic of ethics which deals with right and wrongs regarding medical situations. Yes this is an important area to study because it covers all spectrums of issues including PAS, living wills, and so on. (Things that acutally happen in todays society).
ReplyDelete2. Overall I really enjoyed the class. It really made me think about my viewpoints on alot of the topics covered in class and try and form new ideas related to these topics. I had some input into the class discussions, but not really, and only because I really had no view point on many of the topics because they were not issues which i thought about before hand. However, after the discussions i found my standpoints in certain issues. In regards to the blogging I feel i was very active.
3. The thing i will most take away from this class will be my new stand points and opinions on issues regarding PAS, living wills, confidentiality, and cosmetic surgery. Oh an healthcare!
4. Alot of things still could be discussed more but i feel that i have the majority of understanding in relation to the topics discussed.
5. I personally liked the blog, not only did it allow me to voice my opinions without doing so in person, but it allowed me to view other peoples opinions on the issues as well.
6. I have learned alot in this class regarding healthcare issues.
7. I personally did not share any stories in class, but i enjoyed listening to the other students stories and hearing their side to the issues. This helped me to reflect on potential life stories that could have been shared.
8. I am in school because I want to be a Nurse, and college is the first step to becoming one. I have really enjoyed my philosophy classes and can say that yes, i would like to take other philosophy courses.
1. Medical ethics is the study of what should and should not be morally accepted in the medical field. It should look at respect to individuals as well as those who are affected by the individuals. It is an important subject to study especially in our world today because technology is growing at a rapid rate and we need to set the guidelines for what should and should not be accepted.
ReplyDelete2. In this class I came prepared by having read most if not all of the articles and giving my opinion to the issues I felt strongly for. I was not as active on-line as what I was planning on being because of other classes taking time away from time to be on-line.
3. The most valuable thing I took from this class was to be open to all opinions and ideas because I noticed that I changed some of my thoughts towards certain subjects that before I was very set in my thoughts.
4. I do not think any of the subjects were not worthwhile in the class. I think each subject we talked about brought a different outlook to the medical field that could be addressed.
5. The blogging helped me to understand issues I did not understand previously and helped me to figure out what some of my opinions were because of different arguments people may have given in their blogs that I did not think about before.
6. From this course, I have learned that your opinions on a subject can be changed quickly when you hear different arguments about the subject. There were some topics that I felt very strongly for before going into the class and by the end of the class I discovered my opinions may not have changed but I was open to the thought of the other end of the argument.
7. I think my brother having spina bifida helped me to contribute to this course a lot more than what I expected. Not having to envision having a person in your family deal with some type of disorder or handicapped helped a lot because we all say we would act a certain way if we had a person in our family who dealt with something but we may not actually know until we are approached with the situation.
8. I am in school to help me reach my goal to get into physical therapy school and obtain a set career. I would definitely take more philosophy classes if there were the time and money was not an issue because I was honestly nervous for the class coming into the semester and now after having it am very excited to take my other philosophy course.
