  1. This is an interesting issue. I believe whole heartedly that medicine has a right to be reimbursed for its findings, but I am having trouble of grasping the idea of patenting genes. I don't understand fully the idea of being able to own someone's genetic information. I do fear however that if there is not some sort of 'patent' idea that research might reach a stand still. If it were me I would not want to invest 100s of millions of dollars into research if someone else could just wait, not invest money, and piggy back off my findings. If there is no way to become rewarded for your work in your field then there is little reason to do research.
Unlike Monsanto, they have done nothing special with the gene to change it, they simply discovered that this gene coded for other information.

  2. Talk about slippery slope! If they start to patent genes, what will we patent next?! I agree with Jacob's comments on how it is difficult to justify spending millions of dollars on research and wanting the patent to protect your hard work. However, can we say that it is moral that humans now have to be patented in order to stay protected? I do not think it is moral to patent a human gene in order to protect the work of a scientist. Something needs to be patented to protect the research and hard work that is being put into the development, but I do not agree that humans should ever have a patent on anything. There are other ways of protection that are offered.

  3. I do not think that genes should be patented. I think that is just weird for one that I could own someone's genetic information and two I think that owning genetic material is just an option for people to start doing bad with it. You can't trust people as it is and this is a lot of power to have genetic information at hand. I think that it should not be legal to have genes patented.

  4. I agree with Ashley. I do not think that genes should be pattened. Genes are what make each of us different, I pride myself on my individuality. I would not want another one of me, and if a person owned my genes then there could possibly be another one of me. SCARY! :)

  5. I agree with Brandi. I do not think that patenting genes is a great idea. Getting paid for the research is one thing, but actually owning the rights to someone’s specific gene is CREEPY!
