Current Events: Health Care

What do you see in the news that is related to class? We'll talk about social justice and health care systems later, but since there is pending legislative action on a U.S. health care overhaul, you might want to comment on that (keep it philosophical, please, no political grandstanding). Other current events we might see include advances in genetic technologies, cases like the OctoMom from a few years ago or cases where parents don't take their children for medical treatment due to religious objections and the children die or get very sick, etc. I'll try to prompt you on these stories, but you might see them first.

  1. With all the issues on healthcare reform I think it will be interesting if any more of the states will accept physican assisted suicide because it seems that most of it will end up being doctor choice so I dont know how they will decide who can offer assisted suicide to their patients. I think it will be interesting also to see how this bill will effect patients in where they seek treatment and what their beliefs will be on the whole system change.

  2. Please post links to news reports (not too partisan, please) about the new legislation and its effects here. I'll compile the information for our discussion about health care systems and social justice later in the term.

  6. Is there anyway to post a picture to the blog? I am addicted to Frank Warren's PostSecret, which is an ongoing community art project where people
mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. The website is updated every Sunday with a new set of secrets. This past week I saw one that related to the video we had watched in class. While I wanted to show the secret as it is in art form, I can at least share what it said.
"I made a suicide cocktail for my terminally ill father, But he was to far gone, I couldn't wake him enough to adminster it. He died a natural death four hours later."
This stuck out first because it was a topic covered in class. And second because it shows that everyday people do face these decisions. The fact that the person sent this to PostSecret I think shows that the topic is not discussed enough, they had no one else to tell what they planned on doing or to discuss why. I believe this is because it is such a taboo topic in this cultures eys.

  7. Lindsey,
You can at least post the link to the picture. I'll try to figure out if you can post a picture directly.
