Welcome & Introductions (due 15 Mar) CLOSED

Dear Students,
Welcome to Bioethics. I think you are going to learn a lot, work hard, and enjoy this class. We'll talk about many topics you already think you know and others that are fresh and new. You'll improve your analytic thinking skills, your active listening abilities, and develop your empathetic capacities for seeing many sides of each issue.

Let's start by introducing ourselves, so we can jump on in to some engaged dialogue about these serious philosophical topics.

I'm your professor--Cate Sherron. Please call me "Dr. Cate." I have been teaching bioethics (also called medical ethics) for over 10 years--as long as I have been at TMC. I studied medical ethics as an undergraduate at Miami University--I have a Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies focusing in medical ethics (a mouthful, eh?). I loved medical ethics so much, I went to graduate school to continue my studies, finishing an MA in medical ethics at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I switched to philosophy of science studies for my Ph.D., but have never lost my interest in medical ethics.

Other relevant information about me.... last year I conducted a workshop in medical ethics for the medical social workers at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital. I sit on the ethics board for Hospice of the Bluegrass. (Apparently I am a part of one of those notorious "death panels"--we can talk more about that in class!!). I am also a volunteer with Hospice, as part of what is called the 11th Hour Program--I sit with actively dying patients who have no one else to be with them.

My other non-academic interests include travel, hosting foreign exchange students, swing dancing, mountain biking, singing, cooking, reading, and gardening.

I am very much looking forward to having class with you.

Dr. Cate

  1. Hello, my name is Gina Reis. I am kind of nervous about taking this class since I am an Accounting major, but since Dr. Cate promises it will be exciting maybe it will not be so bad. I graduate this May so this is my last class I have to be able to make it through! I have been working at Jeff Wyler Honda as an office manager for over eight years now and I am ready to move on with my career.

My husband also goes to TMC. We have two dogs, Roxie and Chloe, who for right now are our "kids". Other than going to school and work we try to travel as much as possible. Last year we went to Italy, in 2007 we went to Paris and we are currently trying to plan a trip to England. I hope this class goes by fast so we can finalize our plans!

  2. Hello! My name is Brandi Mahar. I am a junior nursing student, however I am a fifth year at TMC. I am somewhat fluent in Spanish, and I love any kind of Mexican food. I have a black lab named Slyder who is as spoiled as any child I've ever met. I enjoy traveling also, however I do not get to do much of it. I played basketball here at TMC for the women's team for 3 years, but made the tough choice not to play this year due to personal complications. I have a passion for life and helping others. I love to laugh and smile, as well as make others do the same.

This will be the second class I have taken from Dr. Cate. The first was Death and Dying. While it was somewhat depressing, I did find it interesting. I enjoy medical ethics very much and am looking forward to seeing what this class brings!

  3. Hi my name is Ashley Gier and I'm a junior at TMC. I also took death and dying with Dr. Cate. As much of a depressing class as it was I found it interesting and she made it as fun as you can. I have 2 cats that are like my children. I got married in December and recently finished our house. I enjoy traveling and one day hope to go to England, Washington DC again, and to Italy! I love helping people and I love making a difference. I hope that this class allows me to learn different topics and be able to help make the right decision when it comes to patient care in the nursing profession.

  4. Hey my name is Mary Turner and I am a freshman elementary education major at TMC. I just had my first baby January 16th. His name is Logan Matthew and he weighed 9lbs 8.9 oz at birth. He is a bundle of joy that keeps me very busy. I also have a dog named Boomer. He is a cockapoo and I consider him my baby as well. Most of my time is taken by Logan, school, and trying to get back to my pre-pregnancy body, so I do not have much time for "me time." I am excited but nervous for this class. I have never taken any philosophy or bioethics class. I hope to learn many new things in this class!

  5. Hello, my name is Lindsey. I am a junior Psychology major with a sociology minor. This will be my first in class philosophy credit. This past winter break I went on the study abroad London/Dublin philosophy of horror class with Dr. Langguth, a much different topic and format from Bioethics. This was my first trip out of the country and it has made me want to travel as much as possible from now on. Music is a big part of my life, I spend a lot of my spare time at concerts. I am currently trying to focus on finding the right grad school and program for me, while also trying to find a part time job that will work around my school schedule. I feel the topics in this class will help me in my profession one day of counseling, I am excited to learn more about medical topics of today.

  6. I'm Patrick and I'm a senior secondary social studies major and will be student teaching next fall. I'm the music director at St. Cecilia Church in Independence and have been there for 3 years. As you can see from my profile picture I'm a huge UK basketball fan. I actually attended UK for 3 years before transferring here to TMC.

As far as Biomedical Ethics go I have no idea what to expect really, but after reading Dr. Sherron's e-mails I'm entering this course with a very positive outlook. This sounds like it should be an intriguing course with a lot of class discussion and I'm looking forward to the accelerated format.

  7. Hello. My name is Michelle Snead and I am a Nursing major. I currently live in Florence but am originally from Troy, Ohio. I work at an Eye Doctor in Taylor Mill and will be there a year in April. I have a dog named Kahne who is a boxer-beagle mix. I enjoy going home to hang out with friends and family, and I also enjoy traveling. This past January I went to Las Vegas for my 21st birthday (Which was a total blast). This summer I plan on going to Florida for a week, Pennsylvania for a weekend, and Las Vegas for a few days again.

I took my first Philosophy with Professor Sherron last semester which was also accelerated like this current class. I am looking forward to this class, and meeting all of you.

  10. Hello! I am Dana Bors and I'm a junior forensic chemistry major. I hope to work in a crime lab one day. I am a member of both the women's basketball and softball teams here at Thomas More. Previously, I have taken Philosophy of Science with Dr. Cate, which taught me to view aspects of science in a different light. I am looking forward to the new insights and viewpoints this course has to offer as well.

  11. Hi my name is Maria Pabst. I am currently a junior Biology major and am planning on becoming a veterinarian technician after I graduate. I play softball for Thomas More. Our team just got back from playing in Florida over spring break, which was fun.

This is the first philosophy class that I have taken but I'm pretty optomistic about it. The class seems to be related to a lot of issues in the medical field which is where I hope to be heading, so it should be interesting to learn about.

  12. Hello, my name is Megan Grizzell. I am a junior nursing major and in my 4th year at TMC. I love nursing and am hoping to work in either pediatrics or Labor and delivery. I have a daughter who is 18 months old; she is absolutely the love of my life and the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen. She takes up most of time, but I also enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and boyfriend. I work part-time for White House Black Market as the lead sales associate and I love it, it's like getting paid to play dress up with my friends. I am really excited for the content of this class. It's a part of nursing that interests me. I am however very nervous about the accelerated level of this course, But I guess we will see how it plays out. I am looking forward to learning a lot.

  15. Hello. My name is Brittany Goetz and I am a SENIOR Elementary Education major. I am engaged to be married and just bought a house with my fiancee. We will get married next summer when I'm out of school and have my first year of teaching under my belt. I currently work at a hospital doing EKGs, which is oddly enough great practice for my career. I learn a whole new kind of patience and care that I cannot learn in any classroom. I am from the area - I have lived in Northern Kentucky all my life. I attended Bishop Brossart High School. I am a volleyball fanatic, playing all four years in high school, 2 years at TMC, and I am currently coaching Bellevue High School Varsity Volleyball.
I am looking forward to bringing an interesting outlook to the class. I think my experiences in my job at the hospital will bring a unique background to the class. My first philosophy class was the first 8 weeks of this semester and I loved it! Hopefully this one is equally as enjoyable and hopefully not too overwhelming in the workload!

  21. Hi, my name is Mandy Smith. I am a junior nursing major here and is my second degree. I also have a bachelors of science in psychology from the University of Dayton. When I graduate, I hope to work as either a pediatrics nurse or in the OB dept. I'm also thinking about getting my masters degree to become a nurse practitioner in one of those areas.

I grew up in northwestern Ohio on a farm and miss it now living in the "big city". When I'm not working or doing school things, I like to cook, walk, garden, shop, hang out with friends and family and spoil my 6 month old niece.
